Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that Virgin Media, the UK's leading provider of cable television, broadband, phone, and mobile services, has selected the complete range of Harmonic's VOS™ video processing solutions to enhance its delivery of HD channels in the UK, including HD coverage of the 2012 London Olympics from the BBC. By utilizing Harmonic's advanced ELC® 8000 universal encoder, ProStream® 1000 multiplexer, NMX digital service manager™, and Iris™ advanced video analytics software suite, Virgin Media will deliver 24 high-quality HD channels dedicated to Olympic coverage, providing unparalleled video quality to viewers of the world's largest sporting event.
Neil Jowell, the Director of Television Engineering at Virgin Media, said, "With a comprehensive HD live channel from the BBC, Virgin Media customers can enjoy an exceptional viewing experience of the London Olympics. Harlequin provides a range of high-density solutions with outstanding video quality, and Harlequin's high-performance encoding and management software solutions save bandwidth. Our television users can now watch sports coverage in stunning HD quality."
During the Summer Olympics, the BBC will provide Virgin Media with a live HD BBC Olympic channel. The content will be immediately encoded by the Haivision ELC8000 encoder, supporting MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC compression, allowing Virgin Media to deliver high-quality video encoding to users through its fiber-rich cable infrastructure.
The management of the ELC 8000 encoder and ProStream 1000 solution is handled by Harley's NMX Digital Services Manager, a powerful software-based network management system for creating, modifying, and managing service lineups. With NMX, the underlying devices are automatically reconfigured to support new operational parameters, providing seamless operation. The NMX management system is fully integrated with Harley's IRIS video analysis software suite, which offers video quality monitoring, global channel availability, and real-time and historical source analysis measurements for Virgin Media, enabling Virgin Media engineers to analyze their sources and programming over time to enhance customer satisfaction. Downloading and synchronizing the service lineup with NMX provides instant data collection.
"For the first time, UK users will be able to watch every captivating moment of the London Olympics live and in high definition, providing exceptional quality," said Ian Graham, Vice President of Sales for Europe and the Middle East at Harle. "Our complex family of encoding solutions delivers the superior video quality required, while the high-density, bandwidth-saving design allows for the addition of extra capacity with minimal front-end space for Virgin Media."
