The UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) hosted the Para Cycling Road World Cup event, which for the first time last year achieved full live streaming on new media platforms. Unlike television broadcasts, platform streaming has no regional restrictions, allowing fans and viewers worldwide to enjoy the entire 2024 season.
The Swiss production company Livemotion is responsible for the live broadcast production of the championship, while Swiss public broadcasters such as SRF and SRG broadcast some of the races on television. The cycling road race spans over 50 kilometers, with multiple events taking place simultaneously, making live broadcasting a challenging task. To keep viewers on the screen in sync with the race on the road, cameramen must match the speed of the cyclists while ensuring that the camera signal is transmitted in real-time to the broadcast truck several kilometers away. The limited project budget restricts the use of SNG uplink, and it is not feasible to equip the long-distance moving cameras with cables.
LivemotionThe company explored the possibility of IP-based transmission solutions. After testing multiple audio and video IP solutions, Livemotion decided to choose LiveU's technology and equipment to broadcast the competition. On-site, five encoders were deployed, and through the bonding of cellular networks, close-up shots captured by a cameraman on a motorcycle and aerial shots taken by a drone were transmitted to the broadcast truck.
LiveU CentralThe management platform provides remote control of all LiveU encoders on site, allowing production staff to set the same delay for all devices, ensuring fully synchronized remote production with multiple cameras. The final program is broadcast on the streaming platform of European Television Sports and other TV channels. The results demonstrate that broadcast-quality video and speed can be achieved using small, portable mobile devices, while the cost is only a fraction of traditional television broadcasting.
LivemotionCEO Raphael said, "The advantage of LiveU is its ability to provide seamless live broadcasts. When the camera team moves to areas with poor network coverage, LiveU devices still maintain stable transmission, which sets us apart and gives us peace of mind in production. It ensures that we meet our clients' high-quality standards!"
