MTSUThe University of Tennessee at Martin has launched a new major in its Bachelor of Science in Aerospace degree program, specifically in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Operations. This is the only program of its kind in Tennessee and one of only a few in the entire United States. The UAS Operations major combines classroom learning with external field experiences, preparing students for a wide range of potential careers in agriculture, public safety, photography, media, disaster response and management, power and electrical, defense, and more. The technology partner company LiveU provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with video IP solutions that integrate drones, emergency action applications, and other technologies, thereby acquiring critical mission visual information.
Real-world training and exercises
MTSUIn collaboration with LiveU, a security drill was conducted at Nashville International Airport. In accordance with the requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration, state emergency management teams, TSA airport staff, state and local police, fire departments, medical teams, and others participated in this emergency exercise to coordinate efforts. Students utilized drones and LiveU's video IP transmission solutions to send high-quality real-time video of the incidents to the airport's emergency operations center for review, analysis, and rapid decision-making by the management team. The emergency scenarios included actual occurrences of fire, smoke, and explosions to ensure the airport's disaster preparedness and response were foolproof.
Dr. Kevin Corns, Associate Professor of Aerospace at Middle Tennessee State University, reflected, "The students played a crucial role in the beyond visual line of sight monitoring of all the drones deployed that day, assisting the emergency operations center in command tasks. This exercise provided a great opportunity for the students to think independently while coordinating emergency efforts, familiarizing them with the real-time video/drone workflows they are likely to encounter in the real world. Thanks to LiveU for their support!"
Rapid deployment, ready to activate at any time.
LiveUA rapid setup process for drone integration is provided, allowing for drone connection, takeoff, and data stream transmission to designated personnel and the control command center within five minutes. In critical mission scenarios, time is of the essence. Through this exercise, MTSU students experienced how to respond to and leverage drones for assistance in fast-paced, ever-changing situations.
