Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, December 29 (Reporter Song Yumeng) - The 2015 "World Media 500" ranking compiled by the World Media Lab was recently announced in Beijing. A total of 65 media companies from mainland China made the list, surpassing both Japan and the UK once again, ranking second after the United States.

The "World Media 500" ranking is based on the operating revenue of media companies in 2014. In addition to all traditional media sectors such as television, radio, film, newspapers, books, satellite communications, and media services, this year also includes new media and media public relations. The study covers over 3,000 media organizations across more than 40 countries and regions in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, with the top 500 media companies determined by their operating revenue. This year, the entry threshold exceeded $57 million, with an average revenue of $2.23 billion.

The United States occupies 95 seats in the Fortune 500, with an average revenue of $6.247 billion. Among them, Comcast ranks first with a revenue of $68.8 billion; Disney is in second place with a revenue of $52.5 billion; and DirecTV has replaced 21st Century Fox to take third place, with a revenue of $33.3 billion.

A total of 87 media companies from China (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) have been selected, with 65 from the mainland, ranking second. The average operating revenue is $829 million, surpassing Japan to become the largest media power in Asia. The top ten media companies from the mainland are: Tencent Holdings Limited, China Central Television, Shanghai Broadcasting Television Station, Shanghai Cultural Broadcasting Film and Television Group, Jiangsu Phoenix Publishing and Media Group, Jiangsu Provincial Radio and Television Station (Group), Hunan Publishing Investment Holding Group, Jiangxi Publishing Group, NetEase, and Zhejiang Radio and Television Group.

Ding Haishen, CEO of the World Entrepreneur Group (iCEO.COM) and a member of the World Media Lab Expert Group, stated that in terms of media user growth, developed countries in Europe and America are nearing saturation, and the focus of global media industry development is shifting towards Asia. This year, a total of 65 media outlets from mainland China were selected, a significant increase from 52 in 2014. In the next five years, China will undoubtedly become the world's largest new media user country, boasting the most active new media industry and the richest new media applications globally.
